The Keeper: A Life of Saving Goals and Achieving Them (Hardback)
The Keeper: A Life of Saving Goals and Achieving Them (Hardback)
"I believe that we will win."In the summer of 2014, Tim Howard became an overnight sensation after more than ten years as one of America's leading professional soccer players. His record-breaking 15 saves for the United States national team against Belgium in the World Cup electrified a nation that had only recently woken up to the Beautiful Game after decades of hibernation. An estimated TV audience of 21 million viewers in the U.S.--larger than those of the NBA and NHL finals--watched Howard's heroic performance against the heavily favored Belgians in which he repelled shots with his hands, feet, legs, knees, and even his signature long beard.Suddenly an athlete who had toiled in relative anonymity for much of his career became the star of his own Internet meme ("Things Tim Howard Could Save" from Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" to the Titanic), and fielded personal calls from the likes of President Barack Obama ("You guys did us proud. . . . I don't know how you are going to survive the mobs when you come back home, man. You'll have to shave your beard so they don't know who you are").In this inspiring and candid memoir, the beloved U.S. and Everton goalkeeper finally allows himself to do something that he would never do on the field: he drops his guard. Howard opens up for the first time about how a hyperactive kid from New Jersey with Tourette Syndrome defied the odds to become one of the greatest American keepers in history. He recalls his childhood, being raised by a single mother who instilled in him a love of all sports--he was also a standout high school basketball player--and a devout faith that helped him cope with a disorder that manifested itself with speech and facial tics, compulsive behavior, and extreme sensitivity to light, noise, and touch. The Keeper is also a chronicle of the personal sacrifices he's made for his career, including the ultimate dissolution of Howard's marriage--a casualty of what he calls his "addiction to winning"--and its most painful consequence: his separation from his two children.A treat for soccer fans, The Keeper will even captivate readers who are unfamiliar with the sport but want to know what makes a world-class athlete different from the rest of us--and where that difference gives way to common ground.

Special Forces Sniper Skills (Hardback)
Special Forces Sniper Skills (Hardback)
"Special Forces Sniper Skills" is a hard hitting account of the men, weapons and techniques used to coldly eliminate high value targets on the battlefield. Though many books have become best-sellers through telling one side of the story - a sniper's experiences, a training manual or a weapons catalogue - none before have combined the whole spectrum of a sniper's life and skills into one gripping book. This book examines the role of the sniper, and the unique skills employed, when serving as part of a Special Forces unit including the British SAS, the US Navy Seals and the Russian Spetznaz. The book is illustrated with photographs of every aspect of the sniper's trade and stories from the real-life experiences of the author's comrades: men who have served in almost every overt and covert conflict since World War II.

Forbidden Passion - Demonborn Trilogy 3 (Paperback)
Marlena is terrified. For weeks, a serial killer has terrorized her town, murdering women and stripping them of their favorite piece of jewelry. But the most terrifying thing of all is that those pieces of jewelry have all appeared as beautifully wrapped gifts on Marlena's door and she has no idea who is leaving them for her or why. With a serial killer on the loose in his town, Sheriff Dante Valtrez has his hands full, especially when Marlena shows up on his doorstep, afraid and alone, with evidence that ties her directly to the murders. She couldn't have committed the crimes herself, but Dante doesn't trust this mysterious beauty. When the violence escalates and strange and inexplicable things start happening in the town...and to Marlena, Dante can't deny that there's more than just human evil at work and that Marlena is the target. As desire binds them together and an otherworldly force threatens to tear them apart, can Dante save them both before it's too late?

The Pope's War: Why Ratzinger's Secret Crusade Has Imperiled the Church and How it Can be Saved (Paperback)
The Pope's War: Why Ratzinger's Secret Crusade Has Imperiled the Church and How it Can be Saved (Paperback)
This is a blistering indictment of Pope Benedict XVI, from the unique standpoint of internationally acclaimed theologian Matthew Fox. It looks at the Pope's early career to years as Chief Inquisitor, protection of reactionary groups and role in covering up the paedophllia crisis. Presents a new vision for Catholicism, one that is truly universal and celebrates critical thinking, diversity and justice. An internationally acclaimed theologian and member of the Dominican Order, Matthew Fox was forbidden to teach by then-Cardinal Ratzinger in 1988 and was later dismissed from the order. His experiences make him uniquely qualified to write about Pope Benedict XVI. Fox delivers a blistering indictment of Ratzinger, from his early career to his years as Chief Inquisitor, from his protection of reactionary groups like Opus Dei to his role in covering up the paedophilia crisis. But Fox also sets forth his vision for a new Catholicism; one that is truly universal and celebrates critical thinking, diversity and justice.

Neurodiversity: Discovering the Hidden Strengths of Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Other Brain Differences (Hardback)
Neurodiversity: Discovering the Hidden Strengths of Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Other Brain Differences (Hardback)
In this title, bestselling author and psychologist Armstrong reframes the debate about neurodiversity, offering up-to-date research on brain differences while pinpointing the gifts and abilities of people with neuropsychological. In "The Gift of Neurodiversity", Armstrong argues that we have been too quick to pathologise brain differences. Indeed, in recent years, we have re-classified these differences, labeling many of them 'disorders'. While it is true that many do suffer from clinical disorders that call for, among other things, medical treatment, many people who are seen as disordered are highly functioning. What science actually suggests is that there are many different ways for our brains to be wired, and that there are actual 'gifts' or 'strengths' attached to some of these differences. For example, a highly functioning person with Asperger's may be blessed with a tremendous ability to focus and analytical skills. Silicon Valley's success stories have been built on the collective efforts of many such individuals who are ideally suited to work at computer screens in cubicles, and do not necessarily need to interface that much with others. Similarly, as has been chronicled in Kay Jamison's superb chronicle of her struggle as a renowned psychiatrist and medical researcher with manic depression, many highly accomplished artists, performers, and thought leaders such as Jamison have drawn from the energy cycles of their illness to make breakthroughs or create great art. At once a popular course on brain differences, a manifesto on neurodiversity that presents the brain as an ecosystem that adapts to different environments and a compilation of up-to-date research on the gifts and abilities of individuals with neuropsychological disorders, Armstrong's book will reframe the debate about neurodiversity in a very positive and concrete way. Adults with these disorders, in the age of the Internet, are speaking out, whether contributing videos to YouTube about what it feels like to have a disorder (or organising around message boards and blogs to give voice to the positive aspects of their brain differences.

Graphs, Surfaces and Homology (Paperback)
Graphs, Surfaces and Homology (Paperback)
Homology theory is a powerful algebraic tool that is at the centre of current research in topology and its applications. This accessible textbook will appeal to mathematics students interested in the application of algebra to geometrical problems, specifically the study of surfaces (sphere, torus, Mobius band, Klein bottle). In this introduction to simplicial homology - the most easily digested version of homology theory - the author studies interesting geometrical problems, such as the structure of two-dimensional surfaces and the embedding of graphs in surfaces, using the minimum of algebraic machinery and including a version of Lefschetz duality. Assuming very little mathematical knowledge, the book provides a complete account of the algebra needed (abelian groups and presentations), and the development of the material is always carefully explained with proofs given in full detail. Numerous examples and exercises are also included, making this an ideal text for undergraduate courses or for self-study.

The History of Development: From Western Origins to Global Faith (Paperback)
The History of Development: From Western Origins to Global Faith (Paperback)
The History of Development, now in its fourth edition, is a classic development text, which has both defined and changed its field. Gilbert Rist provides a complete and powerful overview of what the idea of development has meant throughout history. He traces it from its origins in the Western view of history, through the early stages of the world system, the rise of US hegemony, and the supposed triumph of third-worldism, through to new concerns about the environment and globalization. In a new chapter on post-development models and ecological dimensions, written against a background of world crisis and ideological disarray, Rist considers possible ways forward and brings the book completely up to date. Throughout, he argues persuasively that development has been no more than a collective delusion, which in reality has resulted only in widening market relations, whatever the intentions of its advocates.

On Thin Ice: Breakdowns, Whiteouts, and Survival on the World's Deadliest Roads (Hardback)
On Thin Ice: Breakdowns, Whiteouts, and Survival on the World's Deadliest Roads (Hardback)
Every year a fleet of men travel beyond the northern equatorial line to the Arctic Circle, a region heavily endowed with natural resources. Locating the abundance of natural gas, conflict-free diamonds, and gold is relatively easy. Extracting and transporting these goods is another matter entirely. The truckers picked to deliver these precious commodities spend two months traveling to lengths of up to 355 miles on a naturally formed road of ice. It is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. For more than 20 years, Hugh Rowland has survived the ice roads like no other. Known by the ice road trucking community as "The Polar Bear" (a reference to his legendary stamina, strong personality, bearish attitude, and prowess on the ice), Hugh Rowland has performed amazing feats and survived spectacular wrecks to become king of the ice road truckers. Each year when the temperature plummets well below zero, Rowland leaves his family, home, and successful excavation business north of Vancouver, Canada, to drive 1900 miles to Yellowknife where he throttles up for another ice road season. From the first snowstorm to the final thaw, On Thin Ice traces the history of ice road trucking, preparation for the trek, and follows leading trucker Hugh Rowland through his nine week journey across the infamous Ice Road. This book is filled with anecdotes of epic breakdowns and breathtaking acts of heroism that are all a daily part of the job. While the trip may be dangerous, these men who brave the odds come home with their fingers and toes intact, their bank accounts full, and the chance to do it all over again...on thin ice.

Interpreting the Axe Trade: Production and Exchange in Neolithic Britain - New Studies in Archaeology (Paperback)
Interpreting the Axe Trade: Production and Exchange in Neolithic Britain - New Studies in Archaeology (Paperback)
Interpreting the Axe Trade documents the changing character and context of stone axe production and exchange in the British Neolithic. Drawing on a variety of studies, the authors explore some of the problems and potentials that attend archaeological discussions of exchange at both a theoretical and a methodological level. Out of this critique arises an argument for an integrated approach to the production, circulation and consumption of past material - an approach which acknowledges the subtle and complex roles that 'things' may play in the reproduction of social life. These arguments provide the basis for a case study which explores the links between the social contexts within which Neolithic stone axes circulated in Britain, and the social and material conditions under which those objects were originally produced. Field survey, excavation and detailed technological studies at the largest stone axe source in Britain are set alongside analyses of the changing character and social context of axe circulation and deposition across the country as a whole. These different analytical threads are then woven together in the final section of the book, where the authors suggest that the patterns explored in the course of their work reflect major changes in the nature of social life during the Neolithic.

Contextuality in Practical Reason (Hardback)
Contextuality in Practical Reason (Hardback)
A. W. Price explores the varying ways in which context is relevant to our reasoning about what to do. He investigates the role of context in our interpretation and assessment of practical inferences (especially from one intention to another), practical judgements (especially involving the term 'ought'), inferences from conditional 'ought'-judgements, and the ascription to agents of reasons for action. Practical inferences are subject not to a special logic, but to a teleology that they share with action itself. Their inherent purpose is to forward an end of action, and not to be logically valid. Practical judgements are commonly to be understood relatively to an implicit context of goals and circumstances. Apparently conflicting or imprudent 'ought's can show up as true once they are interpreted contextually, with an eye to different ends, and different aspects of a situation. This makes acceptable certain patterns of inference that would otherwise license counter-intuitive conclusions. What reasons for action are ascribable to an agent depends both on the context of action, and on the deliberative context. Facts tell in favour of actions against a background of particular circumstances, and in ways whose relevance to an ascription to an agent of a reason for action depends upon the perspective within which the ascription is made.
